Coffee Tasting

coffee-beans.jpg

Initially I planned to go to Sunway Lagoon to spend my day off to alleviate my boredom. However, the initial enthusiasm gushed by my chums when I put forth my ‘plan’ was subsequently dropped like flies when they ffk me left, right, center. And thus, I was back to square one! Just when I thought of vege-ing in front of the tv, AT reminded me that I was supposed to go for a coffee tasting session in the morning. Wooohooo….I’ve got plans! YAY! So I dragged myself up nice and early and went to the Starbucks outlet and prop down for my coffee tasting session. Mmmmm….I can smell the heavenly coffee aroma oredi….

coffee-tasting.jpgBriefing on the types of coffee by the store manager (pic on left) before we get to slurp our coffees. Before this, I didn’t even know there are steps to tasting coffee? I thought there’s only wine tasting steps but coffee??? Hmmm…..amazing…usually, I just gulped it all down. The manager explained that there are actually 4 steps. First, sniff the coffee to gauge the aroma. Secondly, slurp a little and let the coffee slide onto the tastebuds. Then, gulp it down and assess whether there’s any aftertaste. Next, taste it with food.

robusta-coffee-beans.jpgCoffee will usually impact on the middle and the sides of our tastebuds. If the mark on the sides of the tongue is strong, it means there’s a high acidity in the coffee. Coffee which leaves a strong aftertaste means it’s a strong coffee lor. Hahahaha….Strong Coffee = High Caffeine. And usually the strong coffee known as Robusta (pic on the right) are planted on the lowlands. The higher altitude coffees known as ”Arabica” have less caffeine and gives off a nice aroma. They are also the best grade of coffee beans. Btw, Starbucks serves only grounded Arabica beans.

Among coffee lovers, the best coffee comes from Sumatra. Gives a real kick! Other well-known coffees are from Latin America and Africa.

It was a very enriching talk and I learnt more on coffee in general and the ones that Starbucks serves. Great start to the weekend. :P
